The renewable energy sources can have all the applications you can imagine. These include pumping water for its use, for example for irrigation, among other possible uses. An alternative to do this without increasing energy consumption is the production of a wind pump , which provides the energy needed to increase this resource. We explain how to create this mechanism, for which you will basically need skills and reused parts from old bikes:
Much of the materials for this wind-powered water pump are parts used by bicycles , which have been adapted to function for this purpose. This is the case of the gears, for which you will have to use the part you see in the image (the cassette) and, as you can see, place the bolts on its perimeter:
For the piece that will go over the pump, use short bolts; while for the one that goes vertically the lengths will be more suitable. Next, attach the horizontal gear to the axle of a bicycle wheel. Instead, join the piece to the rim of another wheel with three metal supports. Now, you will need a sturdy tripod to attach a tee to the top to connect the PVC pipes. In this piece you will need to install the wheel frame you created. In this case we have chosen to do it with a couple of circular pieces of wood. Next, you need to install the vertical piece in the horizontal of the PVC connector piece, so that it does not prevent it from rotating:
Although initially for this project we opted for pieces of fabric covered with plastic sheets, the truth is that after several tests it was found that the system was not effective enough. Therefore, prepare five PVC or tin sails and attach them directly to the bicycle rims. At this stage you will need to drill five holes large enough for the spokes of a bicycle to pass through. In fact, it will be necessary to insert them to the rim so that they are well fixed, for example using epoxy resin, widely used in plumbing systems for its effectiveness of adhesion. If you check the vertical mechanism, you will see that there is a red ball on the back of the bolts you put in the cassettes. There are actually two, this and the other fixed to the piston of the water pump,
This connector is simply made of PVC pipes. In addition, different bicycle spokes were inserted, simply by heating the plastic, for example on a kitchen fire. Make sure this part of the system is as light as possible, otherwise it will need more air to function. To create the water pump you will basically need a PVC hose and a T-connector. If you follow the pattern in the image you shouldn’t have any problems getting everything to fit:
To keep the system upright, firmly attach a metal rod to the ground where you want to place the equipment. Attach the metal rod to the outside of the pump using screw pliers. Next, position the wind turbine on the pump so that it is high enough so that the link arm is well extended. Finally make sure to join the connector with the wheel horizontally and with the pump piston. Since the system can be quite fragile, you should ideally reinforce it by installing it on a 4 × 4 pole, which will eliminate unwanted movement. With all these steps, the wind water pump will be ready. However, observing how it works and having received many suggestions, the promoter of this idea has applied some improvements to increase performance. Are the following:
Replace the tripod with a metal tube throughout the system.
Move the valve closer to the ground so that it is not necessary to pump the water so high.
Replace the piston and PVC arm with bicycle shock absorbers.
Unhook the sails at the bottom and leave them anchored to the structure above, so that they are in “attack mode”, which will provide more flexibility and promote thrust.
Now, with these last few recommendations, everything is ready for you to start your wind-blown air pump. In this regard, we report below the link to a video tutorial spread on YouTube:
