A new scientific discovery was made by a team of researchers from the University of Palermo and the “Edmund Mach – Technology Transfer Center” Foundation in collaboration with the National Park of the island of Pantelleria :
According to what is learned , the research group has identified and captured some specimens of this new species – belonging to the Acheta genus – to better study and classify them. The insect has been identified in some of the most inaccessible places in the southern part of the island and, for scientific purposes, some specimens have been captured. The scientific study was financed by the National Park Authority through funds from the Ministry of Ecological Transition which thus wanted to ascertain the presence of the insect after hearing its particular and unusual song. The National Park of the Island of Pantelleria, wanting to involve the Pantelleria population and all those who love the island, launched a survey to give a name to this new species, proposing four alternatives:
1) pantescus, inhabitant of Pantelleria;
2) marinus, linked to the rugged coasts of the island;
3) petrosus, which lives among the volcanic rocks in the difficult access slopes of the island;
4) phantasma, which went unnoticed for a long time and was discovered only by chance.
