On January 6, 2025, two teams of firefighters from Lignano (Udine) carried out a delicate rescue operation to save a stranded dolphin in the lagoon. The firefighters reached the dolphin by boat and carefully placed it on a floating stretcher. After a thorough medical examination under the supervision of veterinarians, the dolphin was transported to deeper waters and released. The successful rescue was a collaborative effort involving firefighters, veterinarians, and staff from various local organizations.
Resembling a dolphin, the bottlenose dolphin is a small cetacean with a slender and streamlined body, reaching up to 2.5 meters in length as an adult. Its distinctive feature is the presence of clear demarcation lines on the sides of its body, separating the dark back and light gray flanks from the white or pink belly. The eyes are surrounded by a black patch that varies in size depending on the individual, followed by a thin dark line. The dorsal fin can be exceptionally tall in some individuals relative to the body size. With a diet consisting mainly of fish, mollusks, and crustaceans, the bottlenose dolphin can dive up to 200 meters in search of food, holding its breath for about ten minutes. Video:
