3,200-year-old tomb in Egypt: inhabitants unknown to historical sources revealed. Excavations at Saqqara – photos and videos

An archaeological mission made up of Italian, Dutch and Egyptian archaeologists has discovered a Ramesside-era tomb and four small chapels dating back more than 3,000 years in the Saqqara necropolis , south of the capital Cairo :

According to what has been learned, this is the extraordinary result of a joint Italian-Dutch archaeological mission in the archaeological area of ​​Saqqara, operating under the supervision of the Supreme Council of Antiquities in Egypt, which thus made it possible to discover the tomb of a person called ” Banhesi ” dating back to the Ramesside period:

“The new discovery sheds new light on the development of the Saqqara necropolis during the Ramesside period and introduces new individuals who were still unknown in historical sources ,” explained Mostafa Waziri of the Supreme Council of Antiquities. The new archaeological discovery should help shed light on the discovery of ancient inhabitants who were not known in historical sources:

The temple-like tomb has an entrance hall, a hall, and a shaft leading to a burial chamber and three chapels:

Within it was discovered the sculpture representing Panehsy worshiping the cow goddess Hathor , together with a sculpture of Panehsy and his wife Baia , who served as the singer of Amun , seated before an offering table facing a bald man wearing a leopard skin on his shoulders:

This man has been identified as the priest in charge of the couple’s funeral cult. Even the smaller chapels found near Panehsy’s tomb were well preserved and decorated with detailed reliefs and sculptures, concluded Lara Weiss of the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden.
